Bugs & Insects

The interest in bugs and insects began with one child and quickly spread to many more. It would be odd if we got through a day at Kidditech without hearing, “can we go look for bugs?”

This term, we began creating a bug hotel after the children showed great interest in catching flies to feed our Kidditech frogs. Lou also discovered worms and snails in the garden, sparking even more curiosity! Together, we explored how insects and bugs are an important part of our ecosystem — learning about their bodies, habitats, and the roles they play in nature.

The children made a list of bugs they wanted to investigate and the questions they were curious about, such as “What do worms eat?” and “How many eyes do spiders have?” Through hands-on exploration and discovery, we encouraged care, respect, and fascination for all living creatures.

The children explored an incredible variety of bugs and insects this term through hands-on experiences and creative projects. Each week we studied different creatures — from bees and snails to praying mantises, ladybirds, and centipedes. We made playdough spiders, crafted bug masks, built a bug hotel, and went on local adventures to find insects in their natural habitats.

With Anne, we learned about fly anatomy through art and even raised wingless fruit flies with Lou to feed our frogs. Cherill helped us design terrariums, Sarah led a revamp of our bug house, and Nicole taught us about composting with our food scraps and Bokashi bin.

This project was a rich, joyful journey of discovery — full of curiosity, teamwork, and muddy hands! The children led the learning, and our teachers were right there alongside them, exploring, creating, and having plenty of fun together.
